In his own words
Kyle’s take on Fraser
- What buyers misunderstand
- I live in the Fraser area, and those bumps in the road around 20th just off Fraser aren't tree roots. Parts of this area sit on old peat bog, and the ground is settling. You'll see sidewalks peaking and some homes sagging.
- Pockets
- The right pocket with the right product still draws buyers here, even when the wider market is soft. Near Mount St. Joseph Hospital, you can see the peat effects from the street.
- What to investigate
- Check the City of Vancouver's peat map before you write, especially if you plan to build, because soft ground can mean piles under the home. On newer condos around Fraser Street, sit at the back of the unit. Long narrow plans look great but can leave the bedroom with barely any natural light. Read the hidden costs guide.
- The tradeoff
- A good home here is a good home. Soil just isn't something a nice kitchen will tell you about.
